Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
