Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the ability to challenge particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the system currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
