Seven alleged individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist organization face trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist group along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for targeting sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
