One Piece Ends a Quarter-Century Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in the new year, once the current storyline wraps up, the anime will go on a three-month break until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, the series will produce two seasons every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — including more material, tempo, and timing of the source material.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a half-year break that began in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the visuals and let the comic to get further ahead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to supply fans with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may lead to one episode of the series covering a single manga chapter, with some instead covering more material or more to compensate for time.

This concludes of an era for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of creation, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and of course itself have numerous side stories, and the quality of the art can change drastically between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two at most releasing each annually, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
