The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
